shopping for coordinating outfits

Yesterday Arthur and I went and bought new clothes so that we could have coordinating outfits for our engagement photos. Hopefully we'll get those pics done this wknd and I can put some up on the site soon! I think I'll wait to tell you our idea for what to do with the photos! :)

We also "tentatively" scheduled the Champion House in Thomasville for a reception on May 31, 2008. (That means we haven't paid the deposit yet--haha) Of course, the stipulation in the contract is we can have it on that date (after we pay the deposit of course) IF they don't sell it before then!!!

I think that's about all the new decision making we've done recently.....We're still leaning towards a private ceremony (eloping?) sometime before the 31st (naturally) and honeymooning in Montreal (probably somewhere in the time frame between May 22 and May 28) but we haven't finalized anything in those regards either, so technically it's all still up in the air for us to change our mind!

Another column by Arthur

For those of you who may not get to purchase the Thomasville Times, here's this week's column that Arthur wrote. Funny fellow!

"Last week I wrote about making decisions and how sometimes you know they're the big life-altering ones.
Well, anyone who's taken that road from engagement to wedding knows that there are a lot of other decisions to be made, and they have a hierarchy all their own.
Perhaps the biggest is where to do the deed and what size it should be. So, in the spirit of the presidential primary season, Bridgett put up a poll online to guage voter feelings on this pressing issue of domestic tranquility. Eloping took the big early lead, while big church wedding has been making a strong late surge, but eloping is still far and away the leader so far.
We of course do have our own opinions and unlike our presidential candidates, we may not necessarily follow the popular vote. But then again, we might.
Next down the list might be the honeymoon. There's a whole world of options out there and of course, there's a little thing called a budget too. Here again, we've already narrowed down to a pretty short list, but we're still open to other options as well.
Splitting time at the number two spot would have to be the reception. The where what and how of it all again meets with that thing called a budget.
And within all of these decisions are countless other ones collectively called “the details.”
“The details” are where many man's ship has come crashing up against the rocks.
Remember those probes that crashed into Mars never to be heard from again? Somebody got a detail or two wrong. Remember when they launched the Hubble telescope and it couldn't focus? Oops, a little detail there.
Gustave Flaubert is most often credited with saying, “God is in the details,” while Aby Warburg is often credited with saying “the devil is in the details.” Whether you associate your details with a higher or lower power, looks like we better get 'em right.
Oh, did I mention I'm more of a “big picture”man? Luckily, we have time to work out all those details, and my honey is a harsh task master of the detail. They won't have much of a chance to run amok with her on the case.
Now if I can just figure out why everyone was congratulating me and offering their condolences to her this past week."

better photos of the ring

Here are the photos Arthur really wanted you to see. I was just too impatient and wanted to hurry up and get something posted is the reason for the others. But now you can see what it looks like after he finally had a chance to get in the studio and take some good shots. Here's the proof of why he is a photographer! :)

The ring

A little history on the ring, but don't quote me on the specifics-I might get it wrong. It's Arthur's paternal grandmother's ring. His dad wanted him to have the ring. His mom has told me many stories about the special relationship Arthur and his grandmother had, so it makes me proud to be the one to wear it. His grandparents were married in 1925, so we know it was made before then. Arthur tells me it is a mine cut diamond and it is made out of palladium. If you're like me and have no clue what all that means, you'll at least notice it is cut and set differently than diamonds today!

the best pda out there

I may have claimed in the last few days that Arthur didn't provide the most romantic proposal ever, but he certainly made up for it with the column he wrote for this week's paper.
Someone asked me the other day if I cried when he proposed and I realized "No, I didn't" but tears certainly came to my eyes when I read this. I have always known Arthur is a great writer, but I have to admit this is the best piece I've seen him write yet! :) You might need your tissue for this one............................

Have you ever looked back at the decisions you've made in life and the things that were outside of your control that happened to shape it?
We all travel our own paths and we do a lot of shaping of the path's direction by our own decisions big and small.
Sometimes, when we're confronted with a big decision, it's something we rightly know will change the current course of life.
I was faced with such a decision when I was presented the opportunity to come to Thomasville three years ago. I'd made some very good friends where I was and life outside work was beginning to take shape in a fulfilling way after about a year there.
But things were far from perfect, and I knew I'd have to make a decision about my future, and change was likely going to be an inevitable part of it.
It wasn't easy, and I prayed quite a bit for guidance on the matter. Well, today you can see for yourself the decision I made, and it was certainly the right one. But I really didn't know if I was making the right decision until after it was already here.
But it was one of those big decisions, and it like others, it changed the course of my life.
And in this case, it was certainly for the better.
Just recently, I made another one of those big decisions. And this past weekend, I asked Bridgett Shewmake to marry me. She said yes if you want know.
And again, the decision was made after a good bit a prayer on the matter.
Yet another big change in the course of life is coming up now.
So how does it feel? Great so far! I've found a friend and someone to love in the same person. There's a calmness that's come over me the past couple of days that says it's right.
Of course, I'll be 35 soon and pretty set in my ways about some things, so some of those changes in life's course might not be easy, but I know they'll be worth it.
And if you happen to be confronting one of those big decisions in your life, all I can say is, honest prayer and listening to your heart and keeping yourself open to God's desire is a great way to go.

engagement

Arthur proposed Sat night. Part of me had an idea that it was coming, but it still took me by surprise when he did it. He took me to Dish, a restaurant in Atlanta (we were there setting up a photography exhibit at Endymion). He left to go to the bathroom, which is unusual for Art. He came back and started this speech (and the whole time I was wondering--where is he going with this, did he have something in his hand when he sat down, is he proposing???). He had laid his hand on the table with the ring and the whole time I'm looking at his face and not realizing it! I looked down and was like "Arthur!!!". But I couldn't say anything because technically he had not asked me to marry him, so I had to say "But you haven't asked me yet!" So, he said "Will you marry me?" and I gladly said "YES!"
Now for a little insight to the setting--I had been stressing out all weekend because he told me he was taking me somewhere to eat and to dress nice but he wouldn't tell me the name of the restaurant. Well, I wasn't happy with my choices of what to wear, especially with the way the weather was acting. So, I was all pouty because I was afraid I would be underdressed. Well, come to find out, the atmosphere was a little more casual than either of us had expected. The salmon/brie pizza for an appetizer was good but the cheese tasting lacked a little. I had the portabella capped polenta tower while Art had the lamb. Both very good choices. We were seated on the patio and our seats happened to face the CVS pharmacy across the street. (It gave off a nice romantic glow, don't you know!) The couple facing us were in their early 20s and it was probably their first or second date. They were cracking us up because the guy starts off the evening talking about the Russian economy and Henry Kissinger. One minute he was having these deep intellectual conversations and the next minute he was acting childish. It was quite amusing, especially when they ended the date thumb wrestling! After Art proposed, we ordered glasses of sparkling wine and a slice of cheesecake for dessert! After leaving Dish, we headed to Old Vinings Inn, where Art's friend Cleve is the bar manager. A friend of mine from college joined us and we had a chance to celebrate (and of course we called our parents and closest friends who weren't with us to share the good news!)
We've talked a little about details but haven't made any decisions yet. I tell Arthur he gets to make most of the decisions :) We're thinking maybe April/May right now. We really like the idea of eloping, but most people who've been told in the last few days keep requesting a wedding. Of course, when we talked about a wedding guest list Sunday while brainstorming, we were thinking maybe 20 family members/close friends. So, we really don't know yet what we're going to do. Whatever makes us happy, of course.......
